This report provides an assessment of the national technical potential of Renewable Gas to contribute to enhancing energy security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, fostering a cleaner environment, and creating jobs. Renewable gas is the term used to describe pipeline-quality biomethane produced from biomass. It is carbon neutral, extremely versatile, and fully compatible with the U.S. pipeline infrastructure. The report shows that under two reasonable long-term scenarios, renewable gas has the potential to meet between 4 to 10 percent of current (2010) natural gas usage in the U.S. or, the equivalent of half of current residential use.
